About us

The mission of Romano Kher is to promote the contribution of Budapest's Roma to the culture and achievements of Hungary and Europe. Through the tools of culture, it aims to spread positive knowledge about the Roma for mutual respect and appreciation. The predecessor institution of Romano Kher was founded in 1987 by the Budapest Council.

The Romano Kher serving the preservation and development of the Roma intellectual and cultural heritage, providing the following basic cultural services:

 

  1. facilitating the establishment of communities, supporting their operation, aiding their development, providing venues for cultural activities and the cultured communities,
  2. developing community and social participation,
  3. ensuring the conditions for the transmission of traditional community cultural values,
  4. providing the conditions for talent nurturing and development

 

Managing, presenting, promoting, and enriching the collection of fine and folk art creations by Roma artists owned by our Cultural House is a key task of the Institution.

The institution's activities effectively contribute to the social acceptance of the Roma population in Budapest and the effective promotion of equal opportunities and equal treatment.

The Cultural House contributes to the preservation, development, and popularization of the Romani language. Through its activities, it strengthens the preservation of Roma identity.

With its buildings located at Király Street 67 in District VII and Népszínház Street 31 in District VIII, Romano Kher aims to become a popular cultural and community hub in Budapest. Visitors are welcomed into impressive, multifunctional spaces and rooms set in a refined environment. Our activities are characterized by a program offer that spans across age groups, a family-friendly atmosphere, and a community-building approach.

Our institution is maintained by the Municipality of Budapest.
