Artists' camp
From the beginning, the art camps of Romano Kher have operated as intellectual and professional workshops. The mission awareness characteristic of the institution since its establishment has initiated processes that affect to this day, creating a community that for nearly four decades has provided a space for creativity, inspiration, refuge, and freedom for its members. This family was formed and continues to exist in the creative camps of Romano Kher. The camp institution was created for Roma painters and visual artists, where Jenő Zsigó aimed to provide an appropriate venue and atmosphere for those painters or individuals who feel an affinity and enthusiasm towards painting, leading to the discovery of not just one artist in this manner. The Romano Kher creative camp has become the rearguard for Roma painters in Hungary: knowing that there is one week every year when they can break away from the everyday life at home to create freely, all within a community with a common goal and motivation.
The creative camps were organized for the longest period between 1987 and 2003 in Balatonszemes, making the town and the "Szemes resort" a defining location in the life of Romano Kher and its creators. From 2006 to 2021, our camps took place at a new location, in the Fonyód Holiday and Training Center operated by the institution.
From 2023, the creative camps are being organized again, this time with the participation of Roma artisan masters and folk artists in addition to visual artists.
