April 8, International Romani Day - But why April 8?

Today, we celebrate International Romani Day, a time to honor the cultural richness and traditions of our Romani community worldwide. But why April 8?

On April 8, 1971, the first International Romani Congress took place near London, in Chelsfield, serving as a historic event for the international unity and identity reinforcement of the Romani community. This congress was not just a meeting but a milestone in the history of the Romani people's self-organization and political mobilization, where the Romani flag and anthem were officially adopted as expressions of cultural and ethnic identity.

The design of the flag – with a green and blue stripe, and a red wheel in the center – symbolically combines the connection to the earth (green), the infinity of the sky and freedom (blue), and the dynamics of movement and change (the wheel). The wheel refers to the traditional Indian "Ashoka Chakra," serving as a bridge between the historical and cultural roots of the Romani people and ancient Indian culture.

International Romani Day is not just a celebration, but an event that highlights our community's historical journey, adaptation, and the richness of our culture.
